Since the killing of pro-Khalistan figure Hardeep Singh Nijjar in Surrey, British Columbia last year, over 20 protests have targeted India’s senior officials and missions in Canada. On Thursday, pro-Khalistan elements staged another protest against India's High Commissioner to Ottawa, Sanjay Kumar Verma. This protest, organized by the secessionist group Sikhs for Justice (SFJ), is part of ongoing demonstrations alleging Indian agents' involvement in Nijjar's death on June 18, 2023.
Growing tensions and security concerns
The first protest linked to Nijjar's killing occurred on July 8, 2023, and since then, protests have continued, with demonstrators often carrying posters with anti-India slogans. Despite India expressing concerns to Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and requesting enhanced security, officials reported that security during the latest protest in Ottawa was inadequate, although there was no major disruption.
The protests gained momentum after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated in the House of Commons that there were “credible allegations” of a potential link between Indian agents and Nijjar’s murder. Despite the arrests of four Indian nationals, investigators have yet to reveal evidence of such a link, though the investigation is ongoing.
Pro-Khalistan groups have also targeted temples and venues where Indian officials held consular camps, and staged protests during trade and business events in various Canadian cities. SFJ’s general-counsel, Gurpatwant Pannun, has warned that these protests will continue until Indian diplomats leave Canada.
